Burlesque Play for Newtown
Newtown Theatre (NSW) becomes The Scarlet Lounge when Wayne Tunks’ new play The Burlesque Effect makes its world premiere from July 21 to August 13, 2011.
Set in 1950’s Sydney, The Burlesque Effect sees straight laced suburbanite James seduced by the burlesque world when he ventures into The Scarlet Lounge and meets dancer Honey. Torn between the life he has and the one he desires, will James run away with Honey or stay with the wife who loves him?
The show features authentic 1950’s set and costumes, and comes complete with stunning burlesque routines choreographed by Sydney’s hottest burlesque performer, Sheena Miss Demeanour. Let the ladies of The Scarlet Lounge tempt and tease you.
Writer and producer Wayne Tunks returns to the Newtown Theatre after three sell out seasons of The Subtle Art of Flirting. This year Tunks’ work is being performed in three different countries and four states of Australia. His work has included We’ll Always Have Wagga, Silvertop Ash and The Bridesmaid Must Die! In 2010, he began work as a storyliner on Australia’s longest running serial drama, Neighbours.
“Burlesque is so popular right now, and those new to it can experience the wonder and beauty combined with a great theatre story that’ll make you laugh and cry,” says Tunks.
Directing her third Wayne Tunks play is Alexandra Byron (Petroleum). The cast features Troy Harrison as James, with Zoe Trilsbach as his tempter Honey and Catie Fry as his wife, Florence. The other showgirls include Sheena Barnes, Sophie Cook, Nichole Stringer, Rachel Ferris, Victoria Beck and Lucas Glover as the flamboyant MC Thomas. Rounding out the cast are The Scarlet Lounge regulars, Scott Grimley and Brendan Miles.
And there’s live Burlesque in the foyer beforehand too.
