Bring It On The Musical For Sydney

Bring It On The Musical For Sydney

Inspired by the 2000 film about interschool cheers squad rivalry, Bring It On The Musical plays at the NIDA Theatres, Kensington (NSW) from June 27.

Bring It On The Musical tells the story of the challenges and unexpected bonds formed through the thrill of extreme competition when rival high school cheer squads perform explosive dance and aerial stunts, tumbling and flipping across the stage, performing elaborate routines culminating in towering formations of human pyramids.

Cheer-royalty Campbell, captain of the Truman High School cheer squad, is suddenly forced to spend her final year of high school at the neighbouring, hard knock Jackson High School. Despite having the deck stacked against her, Campbell befriends the dance crew girls and, along with their headstrong and hardworking leader Danielle, manages to form a powerhouse squad for the ultimate competition - the National Championships.

Musical Director Anne-Maree McDonald explains the show’s personal appeal.

“First of all, the music is by Tom Kitt, who wrote Next to Normal, and it’s orchestrated by Alex Lacamoire. I absolutely love the style of music – I think it’s beautiful and charming. I couldn’t say no to it. It was just such a great opportunity.

“I love the fact that the cast are young. I mean there’s nobody over 12 basically – I feel like old grandma. I’m joking, obviously. They’re in their twenties, but awesomely talented dancers, and wonderful singers too. Working with that kind of young talent is my passion, so I’m in seventh heaven.

“I’ve got a fantastic band together. I love the musical style of the band – it’s a combination of hip-hop, rap, R & B, blues, even straight pop and Motown. I really love that combination of styles. It’s hard hitting in a lot of places, and its fast, and the singers really have to dance huge sequences and sing at the same time; it’s just awesome watching them. Not only that, we’ve got cheerleaders who are literally flying through the air, and they’re also singers and dancers – these kids are multi-talented, multi-faceted, and they’re just incredible to watch. And they’re all so up for it and enthusiastic.

“It’s a show full of enormous talent, and that’s what is exciting for all of us.”

How does the mix of contemporary musical styles works in the show.

“There are a lot of different styles in there because you’ve got your two cultures – white middle class culture from Truman High School and black culture from Jackson High School, but the wonderful thing about this show is that they come together as gifted people who respect each other, but not only that, they really like other.

“I love the whole spirit which comes through the show; that friendship is more important than winning games, and the whole sort of learning experience that they go on. It’s really inspiring. It’s very much about taking life by the horns and living every moment. Even as an older person I find it inspiring.”
