Beautiful Announces National Dates for 2018
Following its Australian premiere in Sydney, the producers have confirmed that Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will travel to Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide in 2018. It will begin performances at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre on 16 February, and play Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre, QPAC from July 2018 and Adelaide’s Festival Theatre from December 2018.
Tickets for the Melbourne season go on sale to the general public at 9am this Monday 30 October, and in early 2018 for Brisbane and Adelaide. Visit beautifulmusical.com.au to book tickets or sign up to the mailing list.
Producers Michael Cassel, Paul Blake and Mike Bosner said; “We’re thrilled Australian audiences have embraced this show so warmly, and can’t wait to share the inspirational production – and our incredible all- Australian cast – with even more theatregoers across the country.”
Esther Hannaford leads a cast of 24 performers as ‘Carole King’. Joining the company in Melbourne, fresh from playing ‘Miss Honey’ on the Australian and New Zealand tour of Matilda, is Lucy Maunder as ‘Cynthia Weil’. The cast also includes Josh Piterman as ‘Gerry Goffin’, Mat Verevis as 'Barry Mann', Mike McLeish as 'Don Kirshner' and Anne Wood as King’s mother 'Genie Klein'.
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is currently playing at Sydney Lyric Theatre until Sunday 28 January 2018.
The musical celebrates Carole King’s remarkable rise to stardom, including her troubled relationship with husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin and their close friendship and playful rivalry with fellow song- writing duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.
Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with extraordinary talent. She sold her first hit, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, at just 17. By the time she was 20 she was writing number ones for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll, including The Drifters, The Shirelles and Aretha Franklin. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally found her own voice and stepped into the spotlight.
The feel-good song list is jam-packed with timeless hits, including You’ve Got a Friend, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, It’s Too Late, Locomotion, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman and I Feel the Earth Move, along with chartbusting Mann/Weil tunes such as You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling, On Broadway and We Gotta Get Out Of This Place.
The musical was written by the Tony®, BAFTA® and Academy® Award-nominated Douglas McGrath, directed by Marc Bruni and choreographed by Josh Prince.
It made its world premiere on Broadway in January 2014 and opened in London in February 2015, amassing two Tony® Awards, two Olivier® Awards and a Grammy® Award for Best Musical Theater Album. Along with a continuing Broadway season it is now on tour across the UK and US.
The Australian cast includes Jason Arrow, Stefanie Caccamo, Doron Chester, Barry Conrad, Andrew Cook, Marcus Corowa, Julia Dray, Akina Edmonds, Nana Matapule, Cameron MacDonald, Lorinda Merrypor, Joseph Naim, Ruva Ngwenya, Naomi Price, Rebecca Selley, Sean Sinclair, Angelina Thomson and Chloé Zuel.
