2016 Tony Awards – Winners
The 70th Annual Tony Awards, hosted by James Corden, were presented on June 12, 2016, at New York’s Beacon Theatre, in an event overshadowed by the Orlando shootings, and dedicated to the victims.
As anticipated, Hamilton dominated the awards, taking out 11 awards, though it was denied a Tony Award record early in the evening when the revival of She Loves Me took out the award for Best Scenic Design of a Musical, then later The Color Purple’ Cynthia Erivo’s win in the Best Leading Actress category.
Hamilton writer / composer Lin-Manuel Miranda won awards for both book and score, but fellow cast member Leslie Odom Jr. took out Best Leading Actor in a Musical, a field in which both men were nominated.
