Young Frankenstein’s Musical Monster Set Loose On Shire
Miranda Musical Society (NSW) decided it was time to bring a show to their audiences that puts the word “comedy” firmly into “musical comedy”, with their September 2016 show Young Frankenstein, adapted as a stage musical by Mel Brooks from his legendarily funny film.
In a nutshell, Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced "Fronk-en-steen") inherits his family's estate in Transylvania.
With the help of a hunchbacked side-kick, Igor (pronounced "Eye-gore"), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors.
"It's alive!" he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather's.
Eventually, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds.
“After playing Elizabeth down in Woollongong I fell in love with the show in its entirety and just knew that it HAD to be done in the Shire for a Sydney audience,” says Co-Director Lauren Butler. “I had some fresh ideas and when I got asked to co-direct with one of my closest friends (Gavin Leahy)I jumped at the chance to bring a new vision to life with the intention of complete collaborative fun.
“The only challenges were trying to showcase as many of the cast as possible. We have been truly blessed with some incredible actors who are so intelligent in their character choices and just naturally hilarious. Individuality was encouraged in its fullest sense and audiences will be blown away.”
Cheryl O’Brien plays the ominous Frau Blutcher who has faithfully served the Frankenstein family all her life, and reveals an hilarious secret in the second act. “I was beyond excited to be cast in this role,” Cheryl says, “it’s so much fun playing such a creepy part!”
This is the second time Johnny Acosta has played the monster Igor. “In all my years on stage this is the only role I have ever wanted to do more than once,’ says Johnny. “I get to have so much fun playing him, and the directors have trusted me enough to give me the freedom to really experiment with him.”
Jess Farrell plays the hilariously sexy Inga, an innocent who is completely unaware of the effect she has on the male inhabitants of Transylvania. “This show is absolutely hilarious,” Jess says. “I can more or less guarantee that everyone is going to love this, it’s so hard not to constantly crack up during rehearsals, this is such a brilliant cast!”
Every bit as relevant to audience members who will remember the original movie as it will be to newcomers, Young Frankenstein has all the panache of the screen sensation with a little extra theatrical flair added.
“If you love the movie, you will love the musical even more,” says Lauren Butler. “There is nothing like a night of live theatre and with Mel Brooks incredible script and humour you simply can't go wrong booking a ticket to this baby! “
Asked to sum up the show in one sentence, Lauren says,”it's a multilayered collaboration of slapstick, precision characterisation, incredible music and laughs that will make your belly hurt for days.”
Memorable tunes include "The Transylvania Mania," "He Vas My Boyfriend" and "Puttin' On The Ritz".
Miranda Musical Society is hoping this production of Mel Brooks Young Frankenstein will give their audiences some great belly laughs, along with great songs and fabulous dance routines.
