Witches of Eastwick Get Ready to Fly at MLOC
Rehearsals are well under way for MLOC’s June production of The Witches of Eastwick.
Director Jane Court notes that there are great roles in the show for all ages, ranging from the Little Girl, played by twelve year old Lily Nicolson, to the more mature lead male role of Darryl Van Horne. The abundant female roles, including four main leads and five minor roles, have attracted many strong women performers.
“I was amazed at the talent during auditions and could have cast wonderful performers many times in each role,” says Jane. “My musical director Martine Wengrow is leading a charge to all the incredible harmonies coming through beautifully and choreographer, Merilyn Young, is creating some outstanding all singing, all dancing ensemble numbers.”
The role of the devilish Darryl Van Horne is being played by Michael Young, who is using Jack Nicolson, who played the role in the 1987 movie, as his inspiration. Michael says, "I am not your typical leading man and I am looking to give the role the same edge as Nicolson in the movie which asked the question: Why would three beautiful women fall for this strange man?"
Jane Court says she is inspired by Australian professional production of The Witches of Eastwick, which starred well known Australian actors including Paul McDermott, with Marina Prior, Angela Toohey and Pippa Grandison as the three witches. She is finding however that each of her cast have amazing character development strengths that belie the non-professional nature of the company.
“The challenges of the show will be the scenes that include the three Witches (Erin Keleher, Lucy McVicar and Susie McCann) flying above the stage and when the Felicia Gabriel character (Lucy Nicolson) has to find tennis balls and cherry pits inside her mouth, to name a few.”
The Witches of Eastwick runs from June 15 – 23 at the Phoenix Theatre, Elwood. Bookings: www.mloc.org.au.
