Melbourne's CLOC Musical Theatre follows the success of their non-professional premiere production of Mary Poppins in 2015 with a second blockbuster Australian non-professional premiere in 2016. Yes, CLOC is thrillified to be presenting Wicked, a show so popular that it is still running on Broadway in its lucky thirteenth year.
The starring roles in the show are the two witches, who turn out to be the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North. After playing the magical nanny Mary Poppins last year, Rosa McCarty returns for her second consecutive premiere lead role – playing the misunderstood green skinned Elphaba, who gets to sing the memorable hit number from the show Defying Gravity. Playing opposite Rosa as the beautiful, charming and popular Glinda is Emily McKenzie, who has had two major productions of her own (children Ava and Oscar) since the last time she appeared on a CLOC stage. Onstage, there is obvious chemistry as both girls share songs, laughter, tears, anger and even a boyfriend, and they each meet the exciting challenge of flying, something Rosa managed last year – only this time, she is swapping her trusty umbrella for a broomstick!
Wicked plays at St Kilda’s National Theatre from May 6-21 for twelve performances, including two Sunday matinees on May 8 (Mother’s Day) and May 15.
