But What Is It Called?
Well nothing…or, to be more precise [title of show]. No, that’s not a mistake on my part…[title of show] really is the…er….title of the new show opening at my favourite theatre group Fab Nobs on Friday June 7th. Essentially it’s a musical about two guys who are….er….writing a musical. And two guys did in fact write this musical about two guys who…..oh never mind, it’ll all make sense when you see it. Or maybe not, but you’ll be laughing and cheering so it won’t matter.
This particular production is something of an experiment, since it is being done jointly by Fab Nobs and WMTC. Since they are on opposite sides of the city, and the show will have runs in both theatres, they are virtually doubling their audience. And an added bonus is that this is a VICTORIAN amateur premiere for a show I for one never expected to see. Both companies have stated this is an experiment in collaboration rather than competition. That’s nice to know and a welcome change. I remember causing a furore by preferring one company’s production over the other’s of the same show last year. Obviously, as audiences get scarcer in this economy and production costs get higher, this kind of collaborative effort makes such good sense, and other community theatres should consider this for future productions.
Ang Cuy, a wonderfully talented, big-hearted performer herself (she wowed me in Fab Nobs’ Eurobeat a couple of months ago) takes on the directing role in this production. Her two male leads will be Nick Kong and Karl McNamara, both also insanely talented and both having directed previous productions for FabNobs. Karl's version of The Drowsy Chaperone last year was a knockout, and Nick’s direction of Next to Normal will stay with me always. They’re both fine comic performers so this promises to be very special. Emily McKenzie and Brittany Lewis also bring their great talents to the mix. This four hander promises to be sheer delight. See it at Fab Nobs from the 7th – 15th June…it’s always fun at their “Drinks at the Table” factory theatre. If you miss it there you can catch it in Williamstown from the 20th -23rd June, so you really have NO excuses to miss this little gem.
