From Von Trapp Toddler to Sound of Music Director

When Hornsby Musical Society (NSW) presents Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music at Hornsby RSL from April 13, the production will be directed by Laura Sheldon, a lifelong member of Hornsby Musical Society and former Von Trapp Family member, who has previously appeared in two productions of The Sound of Music.

Laura says, “I’m really excited to be directing The Sound of Music, having loved it since childhood when I appeared as Gretl in my first ever time on stage. It’s a great opportunity to bring the show to a whole new generation who will hopefully love it as much as I do. While the production remains very true to its roots, being the story we all know and love, it also manages to bring with it a modern sensibility and fresh look at the von Trapps’ tale."

Musical Direction is by Dave Morgan, with additional choreography by Lauren Nalty. The production will be designed by Philip Youngman.

The show will feature the talents of The Spirit of Sydney Chorus -- a community chorus made up of approximately 35 women who love to sing in a variety of styles. The Chorus, which rehearses at nearby Normanhurst, was formed in 1997 and existed as a Sweet Adelines Chorus for six years. Nine years ago the group formed into a community choir and grew in number, enthusiasm and quality. Opera singer Karen Bruce joined the Chorus as their musical director in 2011, with Amy Putt as accompanist.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's final musical collaboration features such well-known favourites as "Climb Every Mountain", "Edelweiss", "My Favourite Things", "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" and of course, "The Sound of Music".
