Strictly Ballroom Dances into The Hills

Strictly Ballroom Dances into The Hills

Almost a decade after the world premiere of Strictly Ballroom the Musical, Hills Musical Theatre Company (HMTC) will once again bring the beloved characters and story to life from 8 to 16 November in Baulkham Hills, Sydney.

Strictly Ballroom the movie played a defining role in 1990s Australian subculture. In the HMTC production of Strictly Ballroom the Musical, Director Gloria Dodds is honouring the much-loved story and characters.

“There’s a lot of nostalgia attached to Strictly Ballroom,” says Dodds. “Our production plays into that nostalgia while also appealing to a whole new generation. Anyone who has seen one of our shows in the past will know that we always deliver a quality production and a memorable performance.”

Choreographed by talented ballroom dancer Darcy Bennett and musically directed by duo Emma Rose and Gemma Rolph, the production team has a clear vision that’s evident from the outset.

Leading the cast is experienced performer Joseph Nalty as Scott Hastings alongside community theatre debutante Gemma Pottie’s Fran.

Alex Pottie as Shirley Hastings and Glen Stelzer as her downtrodden husband Doug will bring the perfect level of energy for the nuance of their characters. In his 26th production with HMTC, Jonathan Barons is Les Kendall, while Rick Barta – fresh from performing South Pacific aboard MS Queen Elizabeth – portrays the power-hungry Barry Fife.

The remaining cast – leads and ensemble – are made up of a talented group of performers of all ages.

“We want our patrons to have a true community experience,” adds HMTC President Jonathan Barons. “From the cabaret seating to the volunteers manning the kiosk and serving as ushers, there’s a real community vibe to our shows. It’s an affordable and enjoyable experience of watching high quality theatre performed by local talent.”

HMTC’s Strictly Ballroom the Musical runs from 8 to 16 November, 2024 at Model Farms High School Auditorium, Gooden Drive, Baulkham Hills.
