Steaming at Castle Hill
It’s 1981 in London’s working class East End … and in the Turkish Room at the local Public Baths, six women gather to share laughter, tears and the drama of their lives in Steaming, Nell Dunn’s hit play staged this April by the Castle Hill Players (NSW).
Josie dreams of a glamorous life with a man who loves and cherishes her. Mrs Meadow oversees her fragile daughter, Dawn, who struggles to put her tragic past behind her and find freedom and independence. Old friends Nancy and Jane reconnect amidst the turbulence of their own troubles. And Violet, who has spent her working life taking care of her ladies, turns to them as she faces an uncertain future.
“Steaming is a wonderfully powerful story about life and love and friendship,” says director Meredith Jacob. “These six women, who might appear to have little in common, are bound by more than they realise … and it’s these bonds that the play explores and celebrates.”
Steamingopens at the Pavilion Theatre on April 5, 2013, and runs until April 27. Performances are Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays at 8.15 pm, and Sundays at 4.30 pm.
