Spring Awakening: Rock Musical for Javeenbah
Racy themes, dynamic acting and live rock music make Spring Awakening a brave but fitting way for the Javeenbah Theatre Company (Qld Gold Coast) to end their 2012 theatrical season.
Spring Awakening runs from November 9th to 24th. The coming-of-age Broadway hit won eight Tony Awards in 2007 and Javeenbah introduces the rock musical as part of their commitment to performing ‘cutting edge’ productions.
Set against the backdrop of repressive 19th century Germany, Spring Awakening follows a group of teenagers as they navigate their way from adolescence to adulthood. It explores the often unmentionable topics of teen suicide, sexual urges, unplanned pregnancy and physical abuse.
Young director Joshua McCann-Thomson says he didn’t dare shy away from the shows racy themes.
"Spring Awakening explores many rather taboo ideas but the script tells these stories with such poignancy and passion," he said.
Adapted from Frank Wedekind’s 1891 expressionist play - which was banned in its time - Spring Awakening is an exhilarating fusion of morality, sexuality and rock & roll.
“The show has many contemporary themes that will appeal to a younger audience, and will hopefully attract new theatre-goers that have not yet attended a show at Javeenbah,” he said.
“People are going to be blown away by the power of this script, the music and the display of talent on offer,” he said.
Some cast members were so desperate to be part of the show that they have driven down from Brisbane three or more times a week for rehearsals.
“There is something just so appealing about this show” Joshua said.
“It’s really unlike anything performed before at Javeenbah Theatre and I’m thrilled to be bringing such a cutting-edge show to the stage this November,” he said.
Audiences should be aware that the musical features partial nudity, strong language and adult themes.
Spring Awakening runs from November 9th to 24th on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday nights from 8:00pm. There are also matinees on Sunday 11th and 18th at 2:00pm. Tickets are from $15 and can be purchased by phoning 5596 0300 or booking online at www.javeenbah.org.au
