Snow White and Pirates in Panto at Bexley
With the long summer school holidays coming to a close many parents are out of ideas for keeping the kids entertained before the school year begins. This was the thinking behind St George Theatre Company (NSW) presenting Snow White & The Pirate Adventure, a pantomime written by children’s playwright and musical theatre performer Sally Redman. Sally said, “I am so thrilled that St George Theatre Company asked to use my work. It’s been performed previously with YAMA in Cowra as well as Shire Music Theatre. I’m very excited to see Noni and the team’s vision for the piece. I have always loved pantomime and thoroughly enjoyed writing it and coming up with a story primarily targeted at children with an extra level of humour for the adults."
Laura Rooke stars as the lead character Snow White, proudly carrying on a family tradition with Laura’s mum being one of Miranda Musical Society’s favourite leading ladies, Louise Symes. At only sixteen years of age Laura already has an impressive amount of performing credits including sharing the stage as Mary (with her mum as Lilly) in “Secret Garden” and singing on the Sydney Children’s Choir recording of “Voices of Angels” CD.
Director Noni Hollands said, “Snow White and the Pirate Adventure is a fun-filled pantomime for the whole family. The audience follows Snow White’s mother on an adventure across the seas to rescue Show White from the mean and nasty pirate Bad Beard, the typical panto villain. Snow White’s adventure doesn’t quite go as planned, with the mean and nasty Bad Beard and his naughty pirates making things very difficult. In true panto style there will be booing at the baddies, cheering for the heroes with even Elvis Presley getting in on the act to help out Snow White. As with all pantomimes there will be lots of ‘grown up’ jokes as well which will hopefully go over the children’s heads.”
