SA Premiere for Zigzag Street
Following their March season of the eighteenth century hit, The Beaux’ Stratagem, The Stirling Players are fast-forwarding to Brisbane, 1995, with the second production in their 2015 Year of Comedy, the SA Premiere of Philip Dean’s Zigzag Street. The two plays were written three centuries apart but when it comes to guys and love, what’s really changed? When they fall in love, they fall hard. And when things don’t go according to plan… well, their mates are always there to console them!
In this adaptation of Nick Earls’ hilarious novel, Richard Derrington, 28 and unexpectedly single, is living in his late grandparents’ house in Zigzag Street, Red Hill, with only a cranky ginger cat for company. He’s not quite sure where his life is going, but somehow he’s managing to keep things together. Just.
Richard’s long-term girlfriend has left him. Now his Mum’s on his case and well-meaning people are lining up to give him advice he doesn’t want. As he laments what might have been, and struggles to navigate his way through the parts of life that can’t be solved with liberal servings of coffee and Tim Tams, he’s finding it hard to see an end to his misery. As for his celibacy… how can he forget it when his best mate is helping him count the days?
Directed by Miriam Keane, Zigzag Street follows Richard’s life over six weeks, the hilarious moments, and the more poignant ones, as he comes to terms with his new situation, and an understanding of love and loss in past generations.
Lee Cook features as Richard Derrington, supported by Patrick Gibson as his bestie, Jeff. Caryn Rogers, Nicolle Orr, Carly Whittaker, Naomi Belet, Jonathan Pheasant, Shona Cameron and Jasmine Muller round out the cast, as other colleagues, friends and possible new loves.
