Light-hearted Triple Bill for Phoenix

WHAT happens you take a popular Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, add a satirical play about theatre management, then throw in a classic comedy skit?

The answer is a “potpourri of music and comedy” at Phoenix Theatre (WA), from May 11, directed by Barry Page with musical direction from Michael Vertigan.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial By Jury is only 43 minutes so Page decided to add the short play How To Make Your Theatre Pay and the skit Dinner For One to complete the evening.

SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD GOES NORTH

** Rockdale Musical Society today (May 8, 2012) announced that - due to forces beyond its control - it has had to cancel its planned 'touring' return season of Songs for a New World. ** 

Following a successful season in Sydney’s south, Rockdale Musical Society’s production Songs for a New World travels to Chatswood’s Zenith Theatre in May.

Perve: Centenary Theatre Group Stage Australian Premiere

Centenary Theatre Group at Chelmer in Brisbane’s Western Suburbs will produce the Australian Premiere of Perve by Stacey Gregg, opening on May 5.

Perve premiered at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in May 2011, and Centenary is the first theatre company outside of the Abbey to perform the play.

Perve is an irreverent and unsettling play that interrogates paranoia, ambiguity and innocence in our highly sexualized world. 

JYM Theatre Celebrates 10 Years with Avenue Q

JYM Theatre Co. celebrates its 10th anniversary with the Tony Award winning musical Avenue Q at the Phoenix Theatre, Elwood (Vic) from May 5 to 19, 2012.

Classic North England Comedy for Playlovers

What do you get? Classic comedy Hobson’s Choice, at Playlovers (WA) from April 27.

Written by Harold Brighouse, the title comes from the expression “Hobson's choice”, meaning no choice at all.

The play has been adapted for film several times, as well as the Broadway musical Walking Happy.

Parramatta Girls for South Perth

REAL-life stories of former inmates at the notorious Parramatta Girls’ Training School in NSW have been combined Alana Valentine’s Parramatta Girls, making its WA premiere at the Old Mill Theatre from May 11, 2012.

Parramatta Girls follows the story of eight girls at their 40-year reunion.

The girls were innocent victims of a harsh regime but had their own ways of coping with the system that oppressed them, trying to make good in tough times.

Balancing Family and Theatre in Sunset Boulevard at CLOC

When CLOC Musical Theatre’s Australasian non-professional premiere of Sunset Boulevard hits the stage at the National Theatre in St Kilda on May 4, there will be a strong family factor amidst all that Hollywood glamour and intrigues.

Two real-life couples, Mark and Hayley Doran (pictured below), and David and Suzanne Gedicke (pictured left), have been balancing the demands of family and rehearsal over the past few months to share the stage in CLOC’s production. All four were theatrical performers of note before becoming partners.
