Grease Is The Word At Manly In November
Manly Musical Society brings the rock n’ roll celebration of teen angst, fast cars, and first loves to the Star of the Sea Theatre in Manly during November 2016.
The original high school musical, Grease features all the popular songs from the hit movie such as "Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee", "Greased Lightnin’","Born to Hand Jive", “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “Summer Nights”.
An experienced cast is ready to take to the stage in this Tony Award-nominated musical including Jay Cullen, who plays Danny. “Ever since I saw John Travolta play this part in the movie I have dreamt of playing this role”, Jay said. “Everything in ’Grease’ reminds me of Elvis. And I love Elvis!””
Keith Muir is thrilled to be playing the smooth dance teacher with all the moves, Vince Fontaine. “I can’t wait to say the line ‘So throw your mittens around your kittens, and away we go!’” laughed Keith.
Playing Sandy, Carolyn Reed plays every girl's dream role. “I really wanted to audition for the role of Sandy because Olivia Newton-John made her such an iconic Australian music theater character. While she is American in this stage version of the show she is a character that many people can relate to when they think back to their high school years.”
Director Kaleigh Wilkie Smith was an assistant director to Jay James Moody’s production of “The Original Grease” at the Seymour Centre earlier this year. Kaleigh said, “I really wanted to direct Manly Musical Society's Grease because I’ve always loved the show and wanted to work with a community company that has such a wonderful reputation for being supportive and driven. This show is a universal story written for an audience that loves larger than life characters that are also genuine, has music that makes them want to get on their feet, and a plot that is both reminiscent of teenage drama and childhood bliss”.
Kaleigh also plays the role of Jan in this production and added “The thing I love most about Grease is the moment it captures. That devastating moment of the first lost love, the incredible joy in finding a place in the world, the paralyzing fear in realizing life goes on after we turn 18. It's a really tumultuous time emotionally for everyone and Grease is really exciting because it so perfectly captures it all in two acts”
So dust off your leather jackets, pull on your bobby-socks and take a trip to a simpler time as Danny and Sandy fall in love all over again!
