Goodbye grey skies, hello blue!
After sold-out performances of their recent DIVAS LIVE concert, St George Theatre Co (under the banner of Rockdale Musical Society) is presenting two seasons of the NSW Premiere of HAPPY DAYS - A New Musical!
Created by Garry Marshall with lyrics by Oscar winning composer Paul Williams, HAPPY DAYS - A New Musical is based on the TV series of the same name.
The story is set in 1959, around Season 4 in the original sitcom. The plot concerns the kids' plans to save famed drive-in malt shop and number one hang-out Arnold’s from demolition by hosting a dance contest and TV-worthy wrestling match.
Director of Happy Days Jan Mahoney said, “As a child, I would race home from school and plant myself in front of the television to watch Happy Days. It is something that many of us were literally brought up on. I was sent the cast recording by Jeff Fisher (our musical director) and fell in love with the music. I was delighted to find that it was not a jukebox musical but had its own original music score. I then kept an eye out for when it would be released to Community Theatre in Australia. I was thrilled when I was accepted by Rockdale Musical Society to direct the NSW premiere as this show has been top of my bucket list for quite some time”.
Jan goes on to say, “This show is written by Gary Marshall who is the original writer of the Happy Days TV series and is pretty true to what people have seen on television for many years. The characters are the same, encompassing the Cunninghams - Howard, Marian, Ritchie and Joanie, Chachi, Ralph and Potsie, Arnold, the Malachi brothers plus everyone’s all-time favourite character Fonzie. It also brings back Pinky Tuscadero (the love of Fonzie's life). We have a fantastic cast who are recreating the characters we all know and love. The show is fun and energetic and audiences will have a great time reliving this wonderful show as a musical”.
