Godspell for Lane Cove
Lane Cove Theatre Company (LCTC) on Sydney’s North Shore opens its 20th anniversary season in March with a newly revised version of the iconic Broadway show Godspell.
Conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, The Prince of Egypt, Children of Eden) Godspell is one of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time. Based on The Gospel according To St. Mathew, Schwartz’s soft-rock, pop-biblical show played 2,124 performances on Broadway. LCTC will present six performances at St Aidans Hall in Longueville from 20-29 March.
With his latest musical Wicked an international hit, composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz ranks right alongside Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rodgers & Hammerstein and Lerner & Loewe with musical theatre audiences ‘down under.’
Godspell boasts a string of well-loved songs, including "Day By Day”, "Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord", "All For The Best”, "Turn Back, O Man" and many more. In a funky modern setting and drawing from various theatrical traditions, such as clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville, the parables of Jesus Christ come humanly and heartrendingly – sometimes hilariously - to life.
Godspell is a unique reflection on the life of Jesus, with a universal message of kindness, tolerance and love – much needed in these troubled times!
Directed by Christine Firkin (The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, An Ideal Husband, Sinbad the Sailor and Move Over Mrs Markham) and with Musical Direction by Paul Young, the cast includes David Hov, Kelly Andersen, Belinda Humphries, Sonya Lindsey, Andrew Silcock, Reich Webber-Montenegro, Brendan Iddles, Anna Kourouvale, Sarah Edwards, Andrew Cougle, Therese Bean and Trent Gardiner.
