Expression of Interest for a Sydney-First Inclusive Musical Production of Camp Rock: The One-Act Edition

Umbrella School of Music has announced auditions for their ground-breaking production of Camp Rock: The One-Act Edition. This musical initiative celebrates inclusivity by buddying up performers with and without disability to share roles, fostering a unique and heart-warming theatrical experience.

The production was launched on Sunday June 23 with a workshop providing participants with the opportunity to sing, dance and act from the show and learn how this special production model would work.

“The workshop went really well with participants with and without disability from 8 years old to 57 singing, dancing and acting to their heart’s content with materials from Camp Rock, The One-Act Edition. It was a really joyous event with smiles and love felt all round. The beginnings of some connections between participants was observed. Parents watched on in awe at how well the participants picked up the activities and it was clear many were touched by the scene of delighted faces,” said Ingrid Bass, Principal Facilitator at Umbrella School of Music.

Willoughby City Council Mayor, Tanya Taylor, said, “The Camp Rock inclusive musical is a wonderful initiative that brings people with and without disabilities together – to learn from each other and be inspired to be their best. My son totally enjoyed the workshop experience and is excited about auditioning for the show”.

After the workshop, 20 children and adults with disability expressed interest to be in the show (and proceed to auditions). However, only seven buddies without disability signed up to perform alongside them. All of the buddies signed up are girls and women, meaning we’re still on the lookout for teen boys and young adult men.

Auditions are set to take place on Sunday, July 28 and August 4. They will focus on singing, acting, and dancing in a fun and supportive environment to ensure all participants feel comfortable and with the least nerves possible.

“We are thrilled to open auditions for Camp Rock, offering individuals of all abilities and disabilities a chance to shine on stage,” said Ingrid. “Our inclusive buddy system not only enhances the production but also promotes meaningful connections and a caring community spirit where all are supported and celebrated for what they have to offer.”
