Eurobeat Prepares Penrith for Eurovision
Penrith Musical Comedy Company (NSW) presents Eurobeat – Almost Eurovision at the Q Theatre, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre this May. Fresh of their sold out season of Hairspray last year the company wants their audience to come and laugh out loud at this take-off of Eurovision, ahead of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest mid-May.
Eurobeat – Almost Eurovision is an original musical pastiche of the Eurovision Song Contest. Set in Sarajevo and hosted by the glamorous Boyka (Kat Shaw) and her brother and unfortunate co-host Sergei (Grant Jones), they present for the enjoyment of the audience 13 acts representing an eclectic mix of countries - including the Swedish pop stylings of AVLA, the Russian boy band KGBoiz, from the Hungarian triplets the Molnar Sisters with their powerful folk music (sung in Hungarian of course) and the heartfelt longing of the song for Ireland presented by Ronan Corr.
The show's format makes it highly dynamic, with each performance offering something new, according to leading lady Kat Shaw.
"We do a lot of ad lib and a lot of it happens on the night," she said." it says in the beginning of the script, 'Here's an outline but go for your life with what you want to do'. So if the audence laughs particularly loudly at one section then Grant and I, who are the hosts, play up on that … there's a lot of room for us to be flexible with what we present."
In true Eurovision style at the end of the performances the audiences have the opportunity to vote (having been endowed with a nationality on the night and handed a voting form upon entry). The audience’s votes are tabulated and then counted down as each country’s votes are given out ’live via satellite’. The event is reinvented every night as the audience dictates who the winners are. Once they are identified by the end of the voting the winners return to the stage for a triumphant reprise of their winning entry.
