Cosi’s Mayhem and Music for Lane Cove
What happens when you take a manic depressive, a junkie, a mute, an overeater, a doped-up musician, an obsessive compulsive and a pyromaniac and try to get them to perform a Mozart opera?
The answer is COSI, the popular Australian semi-autobiographical play by Louis Nowra (writer of Sunrise, Radiance, The Golden Age among other Australian classics), to be presented on Sydney’s lower North Shore by Lane Cove Theatre Company from April 6 – 9, 2017.
Cosi follows fresh-faced and idealistic university graduate Lewis, who is contracted to put on a play at mental hospital with some of its patients. He quickly finds himself way out of his depth, however, as this somehow morphs into directing the opera, Cosi fan tutte!
There are many twists and turns, tantrums and triumphs. Through working with the patients, Lewis eventually discovers a new side of himself which allows him to become emotionally involved and to value love. A terrific play about madness, illusion, sanity… and theatre. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will make you stand and cheer! This critically-acclaimed much-loved Australian classic is a must-see.
Debbie Smith directs a cast including John Edwards, James Belfrage, Jack N. Berry, Kirsten Livie, Brent Dolahenty, Sara DeVries, Anna Kourouvale, Bob Deacon, Susan Mozell and Emmanuel Said.
Smith says Cosi is all about the rejuvenating power of theatre.
“It contrasts the madness of society with the world of the mentally ill and makes us question the reality we make around ourselves. Nowra uses slapstick, sarcasm and witty references to cultural icons – the laughs come thick and fast from the opening scene. But there is no intention to belittle or embarrass the people in this world; there is humour and acceptance… and much food for thought.”
