Cosi at Gemco

Cosi at Gemco

Gemco Players Community Theatre (Vic) presents Cosi by Louis Nowra at The Gem Community Arts Centre, Emerald, from August 19 to September 4.

In this hearty Australian comedy, university student Lewis is faced with hilarious and unique challenges when he agrees to direct a show starring the inmates of a psychiatric institution. Despite his vision of a modestly simple production, Lewis finds himself at the helm of Mozart's grand romantic opera, Cosi Fan Tutte.

Guided by the rambunctious Roy, a manic-depressive patient with a love for music and theatre, Lewis attempts to assemble a cast from a group of inmates, from the self-confessed junkie Julie to the invasive pyromaniac Doug. And if this weren't enough, none of them can sing!

Set in Melbourne in 1970, Cosi reflects the sensitive examination of love, lies and infidelity as well as comments on the social themes and ideologies in the time of the Vietnam War.

Loosely based on personal experience, Louis Nowra has crafted a funny and insightful play about ambition, political ideals, mental illness, the fragility of identity, and how being creative often requires a touch of madness.
