CLOC Steps In Time with Mary Poppins and Bert
Mary Poppins has delighted, entertained and enchanted generations of readers, movie audiences and theatregoers, and now CLOC Musical Theatre adds to Melbourne audiences’ appreciation and love of the magical nanny with her umbrella and bag of tricks “in the most delightful way”, by presenting the Broadway musical adaptation of this magical tale at the National Theatre, St Kilda, from May 15-30.
Playing the two most recognised roles are Rosa McCarty (Mary Poppins) and Robbie Smith (Bert). While Robbie has appeared as a song and dance man in many musicals, Rosa has mainly tacked roles as emotionally complex women in highly dramatic productions, so is delighted this time to be playing a light‑hearted, ever-optimistic, warm‑hearted character in a happy show that will appeal to all the family.
Both Rosa and Robbie have had their challenges in this show – Robbie to master a cockney accent which he hopes will be slightly more authentic than Dick van Dyke’s ‘memorable’ attempt in the movie, and both have had to learn to spell that pesky ‘supercali...etc” word, complete with hand signals – Rosa has even had to learn to say it backwards! And, most excitingly for both, they get to fly, which they agree will be a highlight of being in the show!
This production includes all of the best loved songs from the film including Chim Chim Cher-Ee, A Spoonful of Sugar, Jolly Holiday, Step in Time, Feed the Birds, Let’s Go Fly a Kite and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, as well as new songs like Practically Perfect and Anything Can Happen.
We all know the words, the music and the story – add dance numbers, a little bit of magic and a whole lot of imagination, in a musical that soars high. Believe in the magic of Mary Poppins and discover a world where anything can happen if you let it!
Mary Poppins runs from May 15-30, 2015, at the National Theatre in St Kilda for twelve performances, including three matinees.
