Bringing the Words to Life at Henry Lawson Theatre
Written by Australian playwright Finnegan Kruckemeyer, the play “Where Words Once Were” is set in an uncertain time and an uncertain future where it is unclear how the last remaining people on Earth are living.
What is certain is the power of control their government has over them by controlling language and the ability to freely write or express themselves by limiting the language to 1000 words only. Break the rules and you will pay the price.
Young Orhan, a student coming of age, is trying to toe the line. He works in his mother’s bakery and attends school. He gets the best grades and works hard. However, he is distracted by a mysterious figure in black—a silenced one. Getting to know her would break all the rules, but he is intrigued. Under the ever-watchful eye of the authorities, will he risk everything to find out who she is?
Director Ian Fletcher and the creative design team have delved into the world of projections and colors to bring the dystopian story of “Where Words Once Were” to life. His set is cold and dystopian while still embracing the warmth of Orhan’s family bakery where many scenes play out between friends and family.
Cierwen Newell, who is working on the element of digital design, brings a different dimension to the show by crafting over 30 projections. She blends various imagery into animation. Collaborating closely with the team, she ensured that every projection is aligned to enhances the visual storytelling.
