Boeing Boeing Flies in to Castle Hill
They say if you remember the 60s you weren’t there! Castle Hill Players’ next production, Boeing Boeing, promises to deliver a night of laughs and entertainment as this French farce, set in 1960s Paris hits the Pavilion Theatre stage from Friday 23 September until Saturday 15 October.
Written by Marc Camoletti, translated by Beverley Cross and directed by Stephen Snars, Boeing Boeing was a smash hit worldwide when it first landed in the mid 1970s and has enjoyed regular revivals ever since. In fact, Boeing Boeing is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most performed French play in the world.
As the name implies the play relates to the glamorous world of jet travel and 3 beautiful air hostesses from 3 different airlines. All three girls are engaged to the one Frenchman, Bernard, who conducts his love life with the assistance of a complex airline timetable and the vital support of his long suffering domestic servant, Bertha. Janet is with TWA, Jacqueline works for Air France and Judith flies with Lufthansa, and as long as there is ‘one up, one down, and one pending’ there is ‘no problem, no complications’. When Bernard’s old school friend, Robert, arrives in Paris, he is in wonder at the way Bernard operates and while he can’t really see himself behaving in this fashion, he is fascinated to see how it all works. Or not! All is well until a storm over the Atlantic throws the timetables into a tailspin and all 3 girls land on the doorstep for a layover.
Bernard, Bertha and Robert swing into action to keep Air France, TWA and Lufthansa from meeting.
As with all great farces the comings and goings are hilariously timed, the one liners come thick and fast and the physical comedy is demanding of actors and a visual delight for audiences.
Bernard’s Paris apartment is a quirky blend of French colour and 60s furnishings and the fashions of the era will surely bring back some happy memories for many. Added to that some classic 60s music playing from the moment you arrive at the theatre and yet again, Castle Hill Players is offering a great night out in the Hills district.
