Award Winning Songs Entertain at Strathfield

Strathfield Musical Society is presenting another of its successful Cabaret style productions titled ENCORE - The best of the Oscars and Tonys, over one weekend in May – 20th, 21st and 22^nd. The show features the great songs from Hollywood and Broadway's Oscar and Tony awards.  

“The Society has built a strong reputation for performing well-balanced productions featuring a mix of popular songs, entertaining solos and ensemble numbers with great harmony singing,” SMS member Brian Hughes said.

“For me, this production has already proven to be even more special than most...  “One of the songs being featured in ENCORE is ‘Georgy Girl’, which many will know was a big hit for The Seekers in the 1960s and is currently the title of a new musical about their rise to stardom and showcasing their wonderful music.

  “The Society's Patron, Julie Anthony AM OBE was, for a time, a member of The Seekers and we asked if she could help us obtain permission to use the original arrangement of the song. A few emails later, and the Society was put in touch with Athol Guy and Keith Potger, both original members of The Seekers. Not only did they agree to let us use the arrangement, but when Keith was unable to locate the original, he very kindly wrote out an arrangement of the song especially for the Society.  

“Not content with supplying a hand written arrangement from scratch, Keith then very kindly offered the Society the original of his new arrangement along with a signed certificate, to use for fund-raising.

“It is wonderful to be the recipients of such generosity, and the Society is extremely grateful for the assistance and support of Julie Anthony, Athol Guy and Keith Potger, all international artists and icons of the Australian music industry,” Brian said.

The Society will hold an on-line auction of Keith's hand written manuscript after the show closes to be advertised both to its audiences throughout the weekend of the show and on the website closer to the show (website details below).

Performances are at The Latvian Theatre, 32 Parnell Street Strathfield - suggestions for parking will also be posted on the website closer to the show.

In addition to great music, patrons will also be treated to an afternoon tea or supper, included in the ticket price.
