Art at Mount Players Features Local Art
The Mount Players (Vic) present Art by French playwright Yasmina Reza from May 9 – 31. The play is a comedic drama which has won several awards, including the Tony for Best Play in 1998. It looks at the interaction between three friends. One buys a painting … and things go downhill from there.
“It is a play about friendship," said Christina Finch, who is directing the show. "It covers a lot of emotional ground and it’s a fun ride. There is even a happy ending of sorts!
“The main character in the play is, arguably, a painting, which depending on your point of view is a 'white square' or something much more interesting,” Finch adds. “It has been fascinating to see the audience reaction to this character.
“Whilst sitting in the audience I have felt them busily thinking and feeling their way through the action. It is very engaging in that way. There is much to laugh at and much to think about.
“I have not been afraid to allow stillness and silence in this production. Sometimes it is much more evocative than movement or words.”
Established local artists have produced three paintings and other artwork for the show.
The Mount Players celebrates its 40th Anniversary season this year. The remainder of the season is strong and varied, featuring the old favourite Oklahoma, the compelling drama Wuthering Heights and the light-hearted Private Lives.
