Anything Goes at Sydney Uni
Following the success of their 2013 season, The University of Sydney Musical Theatre Ensemble (MUSE) is excited to announce their 2014 major production, Cole Porter’s lively nautical classic Anything Goes at the Seymour Centre.
Directed by Gavin Brown, musically directed by Josh Davies with assistance from Conrad Hamill, choreographed by Georgina Spong and produced by Sophia Edmonds, the production will run from March 26 to 29 at the Everest Theatre.
Winner of six Tony Awards, the 1930s musical comedy follows the journey of the London-bound S.S. ‘American’ revealing topsy-turvy relationships, mistaken identities and foiled plots. Onboard are Billy Crocker, a stowaway stockbroker in love with wealthy heiress Hope Harcourt, who in turn is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Throw in the corrupted morals of evangelist-turned-night-club singer Reno Sweeney, Public Enemy #13 and an inebriated Wall Street banker and prepare for a comic tangle of sin, substitution and show-stopping sea shanties. The score includes the now iconic classics Anything Goes, You’re the Top, I Get a Kick Out of You and It’s De-Lovely.
Anything Goes marks MUSE’s eighth year of theatre-making. The society offers university students the opportunity to create, perform in and learn about performance in addition to their academic studies. Offering both a social and creative outlet, MUSE provides the opportunity to meet like-minded students from across the academic spectrum. Students rehearse in their free time and are solely responsible for every aspect of performance, from production to design to marketing. Since its inception in 2006, many MUSE alumni have gone on to work professionally in the performing arts both in Australia and overseas.
