The 39 Steps at Heidelberg

The 39 Steps at Heidelberg

Heildeberg Theatre Company (Vic) presents The 39 Steps, Patrick Barlow’s entertaining adaptation of the John Buchan / Alfred Hitchcock Espionage classic, from September 15 to October 1, 2011.

The 39 Steps follows the hilarious trials and tribulations of the wrongly accused Richard Hannay as he evades police and finds love while trying to foil the fiendish plot of a devilishly brilliant mastermind. On stage is a rollicking thriller-romance script with madcap vaudeville like comic routines and a delightful array of characters.

The 39 Stepsstarted as a ground-breaking World War I espionage novel by Scottish author John Buchan. It was adapted for film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1935.

The conceit of Patrick Barlow's 2005 adaptation is to perform, almost verbatim, the script of the 1935 thriller-romance film but with a cast of only four. The production features Chris McLean, Kate Bowers and Adrian Carr, who were in the cast of the Athenaeum’s hugely successful production at Lilydale in March this year. Joining the cast for the Heidelberg production is a newcomer James Cutler.

Director Justin Stephens (A Skull In Connemara in 2009), who also directed the show at Lilydale, will be well known to HTC audiences as both actor and director.

Bookings: www.htc.org.au or (03) 9457 4117.

Season: September 15 to October 1, 2011. Weeknights & Saturdays at 8pm - Matinees Sundays 18th & 25 Sept at 2pm.
