39 Steps at Fremantle
HARBOUR Theatre’s first production of 2012 is The 39 Steps, adapted from the Alfred Hitchcock film and John Buchan novel of the same name.
Set before the onset of World War II, the play calls for the entirety 1935 Hitchcock film to be performed nearly verbatim onstage – but with a limited cast.
Winner of the 2008 Olivier Award and the What's On Stage Award for Best Comedy 2007, as well as numerous Tony Awards, the Broadway production finally closed in January 2010 after 771 performances making it the longest running Broadway play in seven years.
Directed by Trevor Dhu, the story follows the misadventures of Richard Hannay (Chris Thomas) who, stumbling across foul play and espionage and is accused of murder, embarks on a race against the clock to find the real killers and save the country.
And along the way there’s some romantic entanglements, too…
Thomas is helped Joanna Zukowski, Sarah Cosstick, Michael Dornan, Christopher Kenworthy and Melissa Klimisch who, between them, play every other character, including heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object.
This once-serious spy story is played mainly for laughs and is full of allusions to other Hitchcock films.
The 39 Steps plays at 8pm March 9, 10, 14, 16, 17, 21, 23 and 24 with 2pm matinees March 11 and 18.
Tickets are $24.50, $22.50 concession and $19.50 students. Book through BOCS on 9484 1133 or http://www.bocsticketing.com.au/whats-on/956/the-39-steps/
