Bring It On WAAPA
The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts’ annual mid-year musical has become a popular highlight on the Perth theatre calendar. This year in celebration of Edith Cowan University’s 25th anniversary, ECU and WAAPA present Bring It On - The Musical, a high-energy stage spectacle that will truly dazzle, from Saturday 11 June to Saturday 18 June at the Regal Theatre, Subiaco.
Inspired by the hit film and created by some of the freshest and funniest creative minds on Broadway, Bring It On The Musical was nominated for the 2013 Tony Award for Best Musical. Sassy and fun, it takes audiences into the cutthroat world of competitive cheerleading, with its fierce rivalries of high school politics and romance.
Two squads, one mission: claim the title at the National Cheerleading Championships. Bring it On The Musical tells the story of the challenges and unexpected bonds formed through the thrill of extreme competition.
Campbell Davis is cheerleading royalty at Truman High School and her senior year should prove the most cheertastic – she’s been named captain of the squad. But an unexpected rezoning forces Campbell to spend her final year of high school at the neighbouring, hard-knock Jackson High School.
Despite having the deck stacked against her, Campbell befriends the dance crew girls and, along with their headstrong and hardworking leader Danielle, manages to form a powerhouse squad for the National Championships.
A show about students performed by students – perfect casting! WAAPA’s production features a huge ensemble cast of its all-dancing, all-singing Music Theatre students.
Bring it On is being brought to the stage by a team of creatives made possible by the support of the Jackman Furness Foundation for The Performing Arts, led by the award-winning actor/director Jay James-Moody, whose musical theatre company Squabbalogic has garnered critical praise since 2006.
"Having worked with many WAAPA graduates over the years my expectations in joining Bring It On were very high,” says the Sydney-based director. “The dedication, commitment, stamina and talent of the student actors, designers and crew has been nothing short of exceptional, and I’m constantly awed by what they are all bringing to this production.”
The JFFPA are also facilitating the visit of talented young Victorian choreographer Michael Ralph, whose most recent work can be seen in Georgy Girl - The Seekers Musical currently on national tour,is putting the WAAPA Music Theatre students through their paces.
“The level of athleticism required of the performers from Michael Ralph’s stunning and inventive choreography is huge but each of the 40-strong cast is rising to the occasion,” says James-Moody.
Bring It On’s musical score will be performed by a large orchestra of WAAPA student musicians directed by Head of Music Theatre, David King.Set design is by Steve Nolan (Anything Goes, Crazy for You), and lighting design by visiting artist and Helpmann Award-winner Mark Howett (Cloudstreet, The Secret River) also facilitated by JFFPA.
