Acting Performance Studio
Acting Performance Studio, based in Moorabbin (in Melbourne’s South East) with 3 other branches in the north, east and west of Melbourne, is a drama and performing arts school offering acting classes for adults and young people of all ages and levels of experience.
Whether you are an absolute beginner looking for a place to express yourself, a professional actor wanting to advance your craft, or somewhere in between, Acting Performance Studio promises you are sure to find what you are looking for in their term classes, holiday courses, casting workshops or their full-time pre-professional program.
APS director Peter Derrick created the acting school as an extension of sister company SmallFry (children’s talent agency) & Derrick Talent (adult agency), established over 35 years ago. As a successful talent agent with children of his own who were involved in the arts, Peter identified a need to offer a high level of training to actors of all ages with equal focus on both stage and screen.
Peter imagined a tiered pathway of acting courses available under the one roof. This pathway, catered to each student’s individual level and age range, would grow and deepen as the actor’s ability grew and deepened.
APS has introduced a pre-professional full-time course to begin in 2017. This year-long program is for actors serious about improving their craft. The program provides foundation technique for actors wishing to springboard into a three-year course and for early-career actors wanting to hone their talent by developing their process. With classes running on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, students will have time for their out-of-class workload and to work part time should they choose.
Led by NIDA directing graduate and Head of Course Briony Dunn, their tutors include Actors Studio life member Bronwen Coleman, QUT graduate Claire Pearson, and VCA graduate and vocal technique tutor Jason Marrow.
The APS Full-time program offers a dual focus on stage and screen. The course includes advanced Shakespeare work, General American dialect study, Stanislavski text exercises, Laban Movement Analysis, screentest and audition techniques, an industry showcase, showreel & graduate production, as well as masterclasses with industry guests including producer Sue Maslin (The Dressmaker), casting director Jane Norris (Mullinars) and filmmaker Robert Connolly (Paper Planes).
APS students are also offered an opportunity to attend the prestigious Stella Adler Institute in LA for an intensive 2-week workshop. Students who attend the LA trip will have a chance to win a 12 month scholarship at Stella Adler.
With their full time program open now for auditions, APS promises the ideal environment for talented and committed actors to grow and develop their craft.
