Glen Street Theatre $7 Million Revitalisation Plans
Plans to revitalise and extend facilities at Glen Street Theatre in Belrose (NSW) have been approved by Warringah Council.
“Glen Street is the grande dame of Sydney’s suburban theatres but, after 27 years, she’s in need of an overhaul,” said Warringah Mayor, Michael Regan.
“This is more than a renovation – we’re adding a state-of-the-art library, a café and a winebar to create a new centre for the arts on the Northern Beaches.”
Glen Street Director, Margot Woodward, added; “This is an incredibly exciting development that will create an active cultural space that is unique in Sydney. Our theatrical and musical productions will stay but we expect people visit more often and stay longer – whether it is to sit in the café, use the free Wi-Fi or to read magazines from the library.”
“The bush setting will also be enhanced thanks to new landscaping which will allow us to stage more outdoor events,” she added.
The cost-effective plan for Glen Street involves moving the current Belrose library to the Glen Street site and using proceeds of the land sale to fund the redevelopment. Library services will be continued during the transition period. The popular gym will remain at the Glen Street site.
Stage 1 of the Draft Masterplan was publically exhibited from August to October 2012. There will be additional consultation on Stage 2 in the coming months.
