We Live by the Sea
What I love most about the Adelaide Fringe is its diversity. Not all shows need elaborate sets and costumes; sometimes all that is needed are characters you care about and a story that will leave you speechless.
With We Live by the Sea, striking images projected on a white sail at the back of the stage are enough to transport an audience to the ocean. Theatre that provokes thought and raw emotion is when you know you are witnessing something very special.
Producer Joanne Hartstone, in collaboration with Patch of Blue and Greenwich Theatre, brings the production to the Adelaide Fringe.
We Live by the Sea is the story of autistic teenager Katy who lives with her older sister Hannah and imaginary dog Paul Williams in Yorkshire, England. Katy is bright, loveable and always honest.
As we, the audience, enter the performing space we are met with Katy and her dog, as they ask whether they can tap our shoes. What follows is a beautiful, heart-warming and at times heart-breaking story that touches on friendship, family and ignorance.
Backed by wonderfully talented musicians, actors give layered performances that expose poignant life lessons. Katy’s friendship with new neighbour Ryan is thoughtfully portrayed, as is her relationship with her sister Hannah. I cried at the bravery of such a tale and the exquisite performance of Alex Brain as Katy.
This is an exceptional piece of storytelling and should be at the top of your must-see list.
