Swipe Right! The Musical
Swipe Right is billed as a “Musical…Almost” and, indeed, it is, with the music being the backbone of this fresh, funny new show. Maddi Byrne’s solo show is also very clever standup comedy, which had its audiences laughing heartily throughout.
Friendly, sweet and very personable, Swipe Right is about dating online, the Tinder traps and unsolicited photos. While definitely for an adult audience (Lazy Susan’s is an 18 plus venue anyway), she charmingly avoids ever being offensive, even when talking about some very adult concepts - a very fine line for a comedian to travel. The show is punctuated by some very clever musical parodies, gorgeously sung, by this WAAPA Contemporary Music graduate.
Well accompanied by Nicole Schrek on piano, this hour-long delight of a show features light and sound by Sarah Connolly. A highlight is a video presentation which I am loathe to spoil, as this show deserves future performances, and the surprise value is excellent.
While I hope that Maddi eventually finds love on Tinder, her lack of success has made for a great show. Swipe Right finishes at Fringe World this weekend, but I am sure that there will be further chances to see this clever, hilarious young woman and hear her fabulous voice.
