Smoked Ham
Peter Goers’ latest show Smoked Ham is like spending the afternoon with an eccentric uncle and it is a pure delight. Greeting the predominantly mature audience in head to toe cycling lycra was an ingenious way to start; when I attended, laughter filled the performance space within seconds.
Goers is probably best known to modern day folk as the host of ‘The Evening Show’ on ABC radio, but he is also an accomplished director, producer, theatre reviewer and playwright. He gives us a glimpse into the amazing and colourful personalities he has met on the way to old age; though he would have you believe he is much younger.
Old school gags and stories are told with impeccable timing. He is charming, yet self-effacing, but always sincere. What is evident is his immense respect for the senior citizen. His rapport with the audience is instantaneous as he helps us remember the Adelaide of old, pricking memories we have almost forgotten, but what a delight it is to be reminded.
It is always a pleasure to watch a performer who is clearly enjoying himself. A show full of sentiment; Goers’ reminds us to hold close those that are dear.
Shaking every audience members hand as we left sums up the class of this veteran entertainer.
