Pre-Hysterical
Pre-Hysterical was selected as one of the showpiece items for FringeWorld’s media launch, which was perhaps a vote of confidence in the calibre of this fun and physical romp designed for children and families.
A trip back to pre-historical times as three Neanderthals (Isaac Lawry, Thomas Gorham and Chelsea Angell) negotiate friendship and basic survival, almost wordless, the story is told through great quality clowning, dance, trapeze work, and some very impressive hoop work. The team have a tangible camaraderie and work well with their young audience, to make this a complete theatrical experience.
I was seated next to 5-and-a-half-year-old Abigail, who stood entranced in this show for its entirety - absolutely rapt and interacting and commenting with great enthusiasm. Abigail said that her favourite part was “I like to move it, move it” which is the high energy acrobatic finale.
The minimal language in this show would make it a great choice for children from non-English speaking backgrounds and for those with language processing difficulties. It is pacy and fun, with a very simple agenda. There are also occasional moments of humour designed for parents to enjoy.
Pre-Hysterical plays in the middle of the Woodside Pleasure Gardens, which is a very family friendly space during the day, with lots to look at and enjoy. It plays weekdays during the school holidays and on weekends until the end of FringeWorld, making it easy for families to catch this show.
