The Intervention
Independent theatre company French Santa has two productions in this year’s Fringe World Festival, with the first playing in the intimate theatrical space in The Moon Cafe. The quaint, eclectic decor, and messy, but lived in feel, is perfect for this new work set in a share house.
Housemates Ryder and Maya, decide that their third roomie Steve needs “an Intervention”. They want him to stop selling drugs from the house, and his alcohol consumption is excessive, but is it Steve who really requires the intervention.
New writing with lots of potential, this is performed by a tight knit ensemble who convey believable relationships. Writer Valentin Lang’s character is also a writer and has a relaxed, if sometimes a little hesitant delivery. Elle Harris, who also directs, is dynamic and convincing as Maya. Joshua Shediak is strong as the wayward Steve, and we find ourselves liking him quickly, which helps the plot. Hadley Lindsay completes the quartet, as reality tv star, drug client and sometime lover of Steve, in a well-balanced portrayal.
A fun show, that has some laughs (and a lot of Emu Bitter) but is not afraid to pack a punch. A great choice for those who love new work.
