Eleanor’s Story: Home is the Stranger

Eleanor’s Story: Home is the Stranger
By Ingrid Garner. Fringe World. Caso Mondo, Yagan Square, Perth. Feb 12-17, 2019

The continuation or sequel to Eleanor’s Story: An American Girl in Hitler’s Germany shows a teenaged Eleanor return to the United States to find that she doesn’t feel that she belongs.

Eleanor’s Story: Home is the Strangeris a sensitively and lovingly performed one woman show written and performed by Ingrid Garner, who tells her grandmother’s true story. A sometimes harrowing narrative, it is told with warmth and hope, and is ultimately a wonderful story of human endurance and resilience. Expertly acted by an outstanding storyteller, this show (like its predecessor) has broad appeal and captivates its audience throughout.

Both of “Eleanor’s Stories” are being performed in Perth as part of Fringe World, before travelling to the Adelaide Fringe. The original, reviewed by Stage Whispers two years ago, is an adaptation of Eleanor Ramrath Garner's autobiography, of her experiences living as an American caught for the duration of the war in Nazi Germany. The sequel goes beyond the period of the book, to tell of the difficult transition to life back in America, as the teenaged Eleanor struggles to return to ‘normality’.

Eleanor’s Story: Home is the Stranger is a must see for lovers of true stories, for history buffs and for those who simply enjoy top quality intimate theatre. A very special and important show.
