Discharged (Number 2s)
If you’ve driven passed new FringeWorld hub, (The Old) Girls School on Wellington St, you may have seen Triage Cabaret’s Zulie Khan, dressed as a wartime hospital matron on some of the advertising. It would seem that FringeWorld believes that this show is one of their key attractions - and so they should. Discharged (Number 2s), is a top-notch cabaret that will appeal to anyone who has ever worked in a hospital, been to a hospital or who has a pulse.
Clever, funny and outspoken, Division One Registered Nurse Zulie delights her audience with a cabaret that discusses the history of nursing, as well as the problems faced by nurses in the present day. As well as clearly being a highly skilled nurse, Zulie sings beautifully, moves well and has an obvious flair for improvisation. On opening night, the heat in that particular space was overwhelming and an audience member (a reviewer for another publication) offered Zulie a fan. The fan was instantly incorporated into the routine with flair and great finesse.
Those who have seen Zulie’s previous shows will notice that some of the material remains in the show, but I still recommend return visits as her fresh, vibrant show is a wonderful mood lifter. My companion was my nursing student daughter, who found that some of the material related to her experience in the hospital earlier that very day.
The perfect gift for a nurse friend. If you don’t have a nurse (or doctor) friend, find a random nurse and take them. You will both love it.
