Crookie! A Mystery Musical
Crookie! A Mystery Musical is a vibrant, effervescent new musical with a young cast and the feel of a Disney Channel TV presentation - slightly heightened, always optimistic and suitable for all ages,
Crookie! played for several performances at Thornlie’s Don Russell Performing Arts Centre (wonderful to have some good quality shows out in the suburbs) before continuing its run at Subiaco Arts Centre.
Centred around a team of young detectives in a police station, Crookie! follows what happens when they finally get the chance to solve a real mystery. It was written and brought to fruition by eight of the inaugural Diploma of Music Theatre class at WAAPA, under the leadership of producer Amber Kitney (APK Productions). Nicely directed by Alice Chaney with a clear style, keyboard accompaniment is provided by MD Lachlan Obst, who also plays some voice roles.
At the performance I reviewed, Andrea Lim was swinging in for actress/creator Kelsey Skinner, as Veronica, doing a fabulous job and owning the role of the confident young nominal leader of the group. Joshua Spencer-Pepper is suave in a Disney-esque way as Kurt. Olivia Holt is solid as the precise Ivy. Jackson Britza is very funny and an audience favourite as the rather dim Mickey, with Tayah Crothers very sweet as new receptionist Jessica, the catalyst for the mystery.
Great to see a bright, new musical that will be enjoyed by all of the family, with lovely messages of friendship, teamwork and understanding. Well worth a look.
