Brassy Broads
Perth Cabaret Collective’s Brassy Broads played to sell-out crowds at the Ellington Jazz Club, featuring the music of some of history’s most stunning female jazz singers.
The music is top notch, with the nine piece jazz ensemble, led by Jess Herbert, a pleasure to listen to, even without the singers. Special mention to trumpeter Matt Smith, who on the evening I attended suffered from a bleeding nose mid-show and continued to play.
The broads were a lovely sisterhood of performers, with a repertoire that included Bessie Smith, Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland, Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald. Leah Guelfi opened the show - a sophisticated and warm performer whose voice has beautiful resonance, and who enchanted the crowd.
Leah was followed by Queen of Fringe Jessie Gordon, who ls literally performing every day of Fringe and twice on Sundays (and some other days). Always a pleasure to watch, she was a delight.
Cougar Morrison, one of Perth’s most eminent drag queens, gave a gorgeously sung performance that also included lots of humour. It was really interesting to see an audience where many were clearly unfamiliar with Cougar’s talents and how quickly Cougar had them in the palm of her hand.
Highlights were when two or more of these ladies teamed together - but this was a strong show throughout, with a great atmosphere and sense of fun.
Perth Cabaret Collective will present another Fringe Show - The Very, Very Good Variety Show from February 11 -16 at Yagan Square.
