The Blueberry Play
The Blueberry Play is a warm, funny coming of age play, beautifully performed, that deals woith serious themes, but leaves the audience upfifted and fulfilled.
Originally developed by the Australian Theatre for Young People, and shortlisted for a Griffin Award, Ang Collins’ play is a first person monologue about a seventeen year old girl whose father is both bipolar and suffering from prostrate cancer, who is struggling with her growing feelings for a boy, and discovering her sexuality.
The title comes from the opening scene, where our heroine is attending an eighteenth birthday, with the theme childhood memories. She wants to look “like Violet Beauregard, but sluttier”.
Very sensitively told, this is excellent storytelling, delivered by a very talented actress, Julia Robertson. Looking genuinely 17, Julia has the audience in the palm of her hand and navigates the hour long emotional rollercoaster with a wonderful depth of feeling, creating a wonderful conection with her audience.
Simply set, with a lovely design by Nick Fry, it features a wonderful blueberry costume and some surprises.
A great choice of show for older teens, their parents, and anyone who loves a well told story.
