30 Minute Macbeth
30 Minute Macbeth is exactly what it says in the title - Shakespeare’s blackest tragedy, told in (under) half an hour. It is a highly charged, super-energised romp through this darkest of tales.
Solo performer, enigmatic and hard working American, Patrick Hercamp, becomes William Shakespeare, chooses an audience member to be the Scottish King, and proceeds to relate his story, playing all the characters with merriment, super-speed and complete dedication. The audience are given responses that must be given at particular moments, which keeps the crowd, already on the edge of their seats, even more focused and involved. (Be careful - you may be making inappropriate and automatic responses in conversations the next day).
Hercamp has a great sense of fun, and places his audience on an express train for the duration, nary pausing for breath. You will never look at ‘The Scottish Play’ the same way again.
30 Minute Macbeth should be compulsory viewing for every teenaged English student, for those who think they hate Shakespeare and of course, for lovers of The Bard.
A very enjoyable half hour.
