Unpredictable Theatre Event for Adelaide Fringe
As a conscientious objector who has refused mandatory military service, independent multidisciplinary theatre maker Nassim Soleimanpour is forbidden to leave his native Iran, but this has not daunted the playwright. In his stunningly different work White Rabbit Red Rabbit, he has created a potent entity to take his voice around the globe.
White Rabbit Red Rabbit is as unpredictable and dangerous as the world we live in. It’s a courageous experiment in theatre involving no director, different actors for each performance and no rehearsal. It is only on stage that the actors read the play for the first time. Those who dare to take part must therefore be brave, have faith in the script and in doing so reveal the playwright’s voice through their own vulnerable, unrehearsed state.
Aurora Nova and Bamboozled Productions will present this theatrical event throughout this year’s Adelaide Fringe with a range of actors, including Amber McMahon, Jude Henshall, Dave Bloustien, Renato Mussolino, Astrid Pill, Katia Molino, Peter Goers and more.
Audiences can expect to be immersed in the power of theatre as they join each performer on his or her journey into unknown territory. Past productions have demonstrated there can be much in this experience for audiences and performers that is at once personal and unexpected, spontaneous, profoundly touching and deeply challenging. Reviews reflect this:
‘A stunning piece of theatre, thought-provoking and morally unsettling’- Fringe Review.
‘Nassim Soleimanpour is a fiercely-even frighteningly-original voice and a thrillingly adept craftsman…Go see!’-The Skinny.
‘Wildly unpredictable and completely unforgettable…a testament to the power of words to transcend cultures and borders. You have to be there’- New Zealand Herald.
‘A truly unique experience’- Edinburgh Festivals Magazine.
White Rabbit Red Rabbit has been performed over two hundred times and translated into fifteen languages since it premiered in 2011. Many of the world’s best-known theatre and film actors have performed the piece, including John Hurt, Simon McBurney, Stephen Rea, Sinead Cusack, Marcus Brigstocke and Ken Loach.
White Rabbit Red Rabbit emanated from a nightmare that playwright Nassim Soleimanpour had some years ago, in which he killed himself on stage in front of an audience that contained his parents. Performances of the script that resulted from this dream can be unexpectedly unsettling because invariably they sit on a tense precipice between the absurd and the dramatic, the real and the unreal…just like dreams and nightmares do perhaps.
With each nightly audience experience being different from the next, White Rabbit Red Rabbit is sure to be one of the talking points of Adelaide Fringe 2015.
Will you be there? Will you participate? Will you be manipulated and will you…really… listen? Will you?
