Gin, Tears and Giggles for Adelaide Fringe
Cabaret meets wacky wine tasting in the one-woman performance The Show Must Goon, which two-woman theatre company Four Stripes is premiering at the 2015 Adelaide Fringe.
Suzie doesn’t know how many tears might be in a bottle of gin but she intends to do her best to find out. She’ll be helped by the audience as they join her for an evening of wine tasting and anecdotes about love, lust, lubricant and liquor.
As audience members sample the finest vintages of backyard Australian booze, Suzie reflects on the tastes and aromas of these beverages as she remembers three hilariously humiliating moments of a life defined by desperate attempts to find love.
There will be three wines to sample throughout the evening, each accompanied with an anecdote and song. The wines are the very ones Suzie consumed as she desperately chased the love of her life and so the audience will re-experience with Suzie the highs and lows of both the wine and the infatuation.
The Show Must Goon is written and performed by Caitlin Armstrong and produced and dramaturged by Maddie Nixon. Both are Brisbane-based and have extensive experience in performance and theatre, although this is the first show they have presented under the Four Stripes name.
Caitlin Armstrong has performed in a range of Queensland based shows and tours, as well as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Adelaide Fringe Festival. She has been a street performer at the Woodford Folk Festival, Cairns Festival and many other events. She's the current host of Brisbane Raw showcases, and has co-hosted the Brisbane Poetry Slam heat. Caitlin has a long history with children's performance and theatre in education. She has performed, facilitated and taught to both primary and high school aged children in schools, as well as with the State Library of Queensland. Armstrong currently works with the Starlight Children's Foundation of Australia, delivering their in-hospitals program of diversional therapy to create a positive disruption to the experience of serious illness for children and their families.
Maddie Nixon has undertaken a variety of production and stage management roles in Brisbane. Her credits include Stage Manager: Queensland Theatre Company's Saison De Lamour and the 2014 Queensland Premier's Drama Award, La Boite Indie’s Hedonism’s Second Album, Awkward Conversation’s Medea Redux, Imaginary Theatre's Voice in the Walls and The 2014 King George Square Lighting of the Christmas Tree. She has been Assistant Stage Manager for Queensland Theatre Company's Black Diggers. Her Project Coordinator credits include Artslink Queensland's Eudlo Dreaming and Liesel Zink's The Stance. She is also a writer, including for Digi Youth Arts' The Children's Monologues. Maddie has recently started pursuing roles in writing and dramaturgy. In 2015 she will be undertaking dramaturgy mentorships under Kathryn Kelly and David Burton.
The talented Brisbane duo behind The Show Must Goon intend to produce it in their home town in the future too, but Adelaide will enjoy it first, so book soon for this rib-tickling romp where wine meets whinge in a uniquely funny way.
