Gatsby Makes Baz Too Busy for Dancing.
UPDATE: Strictly Ballroom The Musical now to open in March 2014 - link to more details
Global Creatures today (February 8, 2013) officially confirmed the news we reported here earlier this week, that STRICTLY BALLROOM, the company's stage version of the much-loved 1992 Australian film, will move its opening date at the Sydney Lyric to early 2014.
Our Earlier Report
Baz Lurhmann has put his plans for a musical adaptation of Strictly Ballroom on hold.
While there has been no official announcement as yet, Stage Whispers has now been informed by two different industry sources that the stage musical version of Strictly Ballroom, scheduled to open at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in September 2013, has now been postponed.
The news is consistent with the cancellation of auditions for the show, initially announced to take place in September 2012.
Stage Whispers understands that the new production of Grease will fill the venues previously booked for the production.
An official announcement is expected when a new opening date for Strictly Ballroom can be set.
Sources have told Stage Whispers Baz Lurhmann has been too busy finalizing his new film of The Great Gatsby in recent months to focus on a new project.
After several shuffles, The Great Gatsby has now settled on a May 30 release date in Australia - two weeks after its US release.
STRICTLY BALLROOM will be directed for the stage by Baz Luhrmann, and the production will be designed by Catherine Martin.
