Songs for a New World for Sydney’s South

Songs for a New World for Sydney’s South

Rockdale Musical Society (NSW) will present Songs for a New World by Jason Robert Brown from March 16 – 24, 2012.

Songs for a New World is about one moment — or rather, isolated moments in the lives of many characters — in a variety of eras. Jason Robert Brown transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge 57 stories above Fifth Avenue to meet a startling array of characters. They range from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams and a soulless marriage. These are the stories and characters of today, the songs for a new world.

Director Osman Kabbara says Songs has everything: the balance of a well-nutured classic with a modern up-tempo musical.

Songs for a New World is that very rare beast: an abstract musical. There is no specific location other than the human heart and mind but the moments in life it captures are very real, very universal: the loss of a job; an unexpected pregnancy; the death of a loved one; the end of a marriage; imprisonment and more.

“These scene-songs chart the survival process of the modern individual through these challenges… their journey to the New World.”

Though originally performed on Broadway with a cast of four, RMS have extended this to eleven to take advantage of the talent at their disposal.

Alongside Osman Kabbara on the production team is musical director Greg Jones, with a cast featuring Adam Ring, Amanda Porter, Anita Margiotta, Brad Facey, Chiz Watson, Elise Atkins, Jacqui Greenfield, Kath Sharpham, Nelson Padilla, Sam Larielle and Tim Moxey.
