Mr Bailey’s Minder in Adelaide

Mr Bailey’s Minder in Adelaide

Themes of aging, family relationships, teenage rebellion and marital breakdown are tempered by those of love, kindness and forgiveness in Debra Oswald’s immersive play, Mr Bailey’s Minder.

To be staged from August 3rd to 13th by St Jude’s Players, Brighton, SA, the play is centred around its principal characters of Leo Bailey, a renowned artist and Therese, his minder, and enhanced throughout by the discussion of Leo’s art.

Director, Vicky Horwood said, ‘Leo Bailey is perhaps based on the lives of several Australian artists; those whose lives are rich in emotion and temperament, abounding in talent, but perhaps fundamentally flawed in other ways.’

Horwood went on to say, ‘Art is all around us, whether or not one goes to art galleries. It is there in our everyday lives, in the formation of the clouds, the pattern of the stars and the changing colours of the sunsets. It’s in the Australian outback, the gardens in our streets, the young faces of children playing in the park and the faces of our loved ones.’

The media release from St Jude’s shares this outline of the play.

Leo paints ordinary stuff and ordinary people, but his picture will make them look special; beautiful and glowing. But it’s not ‘tizzying things up’. It’s like Leo can see the special essence inside a thing or a person, so that when someone looks at the painting, they can see it, too.

Mr Bailey’s Minder is a tough, funny and big-hearted play.  It’s about shame and judgment; about who deserves to be loved and forgiven. It looks at how people exploit each other and where they find the beauty in going beyond, letting go and forgiveness.

Cast includes Andrew Horwood (Leo), Leah Lowe (Therese), Joanne St Clair (Margo) and Hall Bruce (Gavin/Karl).
