Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s Current Home to Remain Theatre After Move to New Home

Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s current theatre will be retained and continue to be a theatre once the company moves to its new home in 2013.

The current theatre will be retained by the The City of Sydney for emerging artists and the development of new work. The City of Sydney will take expressions of interest from prospective companies to run the theatre for this purpose.

Currently the City of Sydney is taking feedback about the naming of new theatre that is being created at the site of the old Burton Street Tabernacle in Darlinghurst. This will be Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s new home in 2013. The theatre won’t be named Darlinghurst Theatre as the company will be the tenant.

The name that is currently being recommended by Council is The Tabernacle Theatre.

DTC’s Glenn Terry feels this has strong religious connotations and Darlinghurst Theatre Company would prefer it to be called the Burton Street Theatre.

The Council want to retain the historical link to its previous use as a Baptist Tabernacle, which it was for 132 years.

The historical link however, will naturally be retained as the building has Tabernacle embossed in concrete lettering across the facade of the building.

DTC feels Burton Street Theatre would be timeless and work well and that the history aspect is already retained due to the building facade.

Without support from the theatre industry, the building may be named The Tabernacle Theatre for ever and a day.

It will be a new theatre in Sydney, an important moment in Sydney Theatre history, so have your say. The City of Sydney do listen, and are making a significant investment in this new venue for independent theatre..

The Tabernacle Theatre is the name the Council has chosen, but is open for comment until Oct 14, 2011.
